Dear Members, May I on behalf of the Branch Council wish each and every one of you a Happy and Prosperous New Year. In the uncertain climate we face this coming year the importance of the Institution is something we may all benefit from in dealing with issues, which will arise. As you are aware at this time of year we are obliged to pay our annual subscription to the Institution. The good news is that due to the decline of Sterling against the Euro this will cost us less this year. The current and last years subscription rates are noted on our web site www.ife.ie. Any member who is in arrears for a number of years can bring himself or herself back into benefit by forwarding two years current subscription. When you consider the receiving of a monthly Journal and access to the Institutions Web site it is good value for money. Below you will find your current information held on our database if any detail is incorrect please contact the Membership Secretary. P.A. Halley FIFireE, Branch Hon. Secretary

I am very honoured to have been selected to act as president of the IFE Republic of Ireland branch for the period 2009-2011. I thank Peter Bluett our immediate past President 2007-2009 for his able stewardship of our branch. 2010 will be a difficult year for the economy and the country. However Fire engineering advances as a distinct discipline of equal standing with our professional colleagues. The IFE is working to keep members informed through technical sessions, exam classes, website and our annual conference. Notwithstanding the economic downturn there will continue to be public and private sectors employment opportunities for our specialist fire expertise for both new and existing building stock due to building regulation and health and safety requirements. To stand still is not an option, I strongly urge all members to map out a career path and further develop and advance through ongoing continuing professional development (CPD). As a new year commences I wish to pay tribute to the hard working dedicated members of our Branch and all who continue to support the IFE. Special thanks is due to our guest speakers, lecturers and tutors who pass on their expertise and experience at our exam classes, technical sessions and at our annual conference. We continue to welcome new members to our profession. For further information feel free to consult our web site www.ife.ie On behalf of our Branch I wish you peace, success and happiness in 2010. JAMES FARRELL MI(Fire)E. BRANCH PRESIDENT |

Disability Access Certificate The requirement for a Disability Access Certificate was introduced in 2009, in order to improve the compliance of buildings with Part M of the Building Regulations (currently Part M 2000). A Disability Access Certificate is required for new buildings, other than dwellings (but including apartment buildings) as well as certain works (as set out in Article 20 D (1) of SI 351), to which the requirements of Part M apply and which commence or take place on or after 1 January 2010. It is anticipated that applications for a certificate would be made concurrent with the fire safety certificate application for the premises. A standard fee of €800 applies.
